Tour Overview

Step into the heart of China's legendary Northwest — a land where ancient Silk Road caravans once crossed vast deserts, where rainbow-striped mountains rise from the earth, and where sacred lakes shimmer beneath endless plateau skies.

This 7-day, 6-night itinerary weaves together the cultural treasures of Gansu and the natural wonders of Qinghai. You'll walk the ramparts of the Great Wall's western terminus, stand in awe before millennia-old Buddhist art, ride camels across singing sand dunes, and witness one of China's most breathtaking geological spectacles.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your journey through the Silk Road, mapped out in detail.

D1 Xining city on the Tibetan plateau

Arrival in Xining

Xining — Qinghai Province

Welcome to the Tibetan Plateau. Upon arrival at Xining Caojiabao Airport or the railway station, your local guide will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. Spend the evening acclimatizing to the altitude and exploring the lively streets of Xining.

Altitude: 2,275m Accommodation: Xining
  • Airport / railway station pickup
  • Hotel check-in and rest
  • Evening stroll along the Huangshui River
D2 Qinghai Lake blue plateau scenery

Qinghai Lake & Chaka Salt Lake

Qinghai Lake — Chaka

Depart early for a full-day exploration of China's largest saltwater lake. In summer, the shores burst with golden rapeseed flowers against an impossible blue. Later, visit Chaka Salt Lake — the "Mirror of the Sky" — where crystalline waters reflect clouds and mountains in perfect symmetry.

Altitude: 3,200m Season: May–October Accommodation: Chaka / Qinghai Lake
  • Sunrise over Qinghai Lake
  • Scenic lakeside cycling or walking
  • Chaka Salt Lake photography tour
  • Small train ride across the salt flats
D3 Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains

Zhangye Danxia — Rainbow Mountains

Zhangye — Gansu Province

Travel west into Gansu to witness one of nature's most extraordinary palettes. The Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park showcases striped mountains in crimson, ochre, gold, and jade — formed over 24 million years of sedimentary layering and tectonic uplift. Sunset here is unforgettable.

  • Danxia Landform sunset viewpoint
  • Photography at Rainbow Mountain platforms
  • Local Gansu cuisine dinner
D4 Jiayuguan Great Wall fortress

Jiayuguan — The Great Wall's Western End

Jiayuguan — Gansu Province

Stand at the edge of empire. Jiayuguan is the western terminus of the Ming Great Wall, a formidable fortress rising from the Gobi Desert. Walk the ramparts where sentries once scanned the horizon for Mongol horsemen, and visit the Overhanging Great Wall — a dramatic section perched on a 45-degree ridge.

UNESCO World Heritage Accommodation: Jiayuguan
  • Jiayuguan Pass fortress tour
  • Great Wall Museum visit
  • Overhanging Great Wall hike
  • Wei-Jin Ancient Tomb murals
D5 Dunhuang desert dunes at sunset

Dunhuang — Mogao Caves & Singing Sand Dunes

Dunhuang — Gansu Province

Arrive in Dunhuang, the jewel of the Silk Road. In the morning, explore the Mogao Caves — a thousand-year gallery of Buddhist art with over 45,000 square meters of murals. In the evening, climb the Singing Sand Dunes to Crescent Moon Spring, where an oasis has defied the desert for millennia.

D6 Northwest China desert road travel

Yardang Geopark & Jade Gate Pass

Dunhuang — Yumen / Yangguan

Venture into the remote western desert to explore the Yardang National Geopark — a ghost city of wind-carved rock formations stretching to the horizon. Visit the ancient Jade Gate Pass and Yangguan Pass, once the final outposts of Chinese civilization before the vastness of Central Asia.

  • Jade Gate Pass historical site
  • Yangguan Pass and ancient beacon tower
