Detailed Itinerary
A carefully planned 4-day journey through the natural wonders of Zhangjiajie
Welcome to Zhangjiajie. Our driver will meet you at the airport or train station exit and transfer you to your hotel to check in and rest. The rest of the day is yours to spend freely — relax at the hotel after your journey or take a stroll around the neighbourhood.
Suggested ways to arrive:
1. By air: Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) offers many direct international flights, including from Malaysia (4h55m) and South Korea (3h35m), as well as direct domestic routes from Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Hong Kong — making access very convenient.
2. By train: Zhangjiajie also has excellent rail connections. You can travel by high-speed train from Changsha (2–4h), Fenghuang Ancient Town (1h), Beijing (11h), Shanghai (9h), Guilin (7h) and Guangzhou (13h15m).
Today you will spend a full day exploring the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. You'll start at China's first national forest park — Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Ride the scenic train through scenery that resembles a traditional Chinese ink painting and admire the beautifully named Ten-Mile Gallery. We suggest riding the train to the end of the line and then walking back to enjoy the views at a leisurely pace.
Next, continue by shuttle bus to the Bailong Elevator, known as the "world's No. 1 lift". This glass elevator once broke the Guinness World Record as the tallest outdoor elevator, and it is also the fastest and heaviest outdoor sightseeing lift. In just 66 seconds it carries you smoothly from the foot of the mountain to the summit, giving you a thrilling instant ascent from the deep valley to the clouds.
From the summit platform you can take in the magnificent peaks all around, then walk into the real-life world of Pandora — Yuanjiajie — the filming location for the movie Avatar and home to the real Hallelujah Mountain (originally named the South Heaven Pillar). Follow the trails to visit highlights such as Mihun Terrace (Enchanting Platform) and the Back Garden.
Afterwards, take the shuttle bus to the Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, known as the "king of the peak forests". Here you will walk to He Long Park to see the bronze statues of Marshal He Long and his warhorse, and enjoy the spectacular scenery of soaring peaks from the nearby viewing platforms. Then head to Jiangtai (Reviewing Stand) for a panoramic view over the West Sea peak forest, where countless peaks stand like ranks of soldiers on parade.
Today's Highlights
- Bailong Elevator — the world's tallest outdoor elevator
- Yuanjiajie — filming location of Avatar
- Hallelujah Mountain — the former South Heaven Pillar
- Tianzi Mountain — the king of the peak forests
- Ten-Mile Gallery — scenery like an ink painting
After breakfast you'll visit the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, praised as one of the most beautiful canyons in the world, and walk the world's longest and highest fully transparent glass bridge — the Yuntian Du Glass Bridge. The world's first cable-stayed, large-variable spatial cable glass suspension bridge, it stretches about 375 metres and is paved with 99 panes of clear glass. From a distance the bridge looks as thin as a cicada's wing, almost invisible against the landscape, and the deck sits roughly 300 metres above the valley floor. Walking across it you can take in the whole canyon, or look straight down into the depths below — an exhilarating experience.
Then continue to the mirror-calm Baofeng Lake. Nestled among encircling mountains, the lake has clear emerald water that reflects the blue sky, white clouds and surrounding peaks, looking just like a finely painted ink scroll. Board a traditional wooden boat and glide between the mountains and the water, soaking in the lake and mountain scenery at a relaxed, peaceful pace.
Today's Highlights
- Yuntian Du Glass Bridge — the world's highest and longest glass bridge
- Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon — one of the world's most beautiful canyons
- Baofeng Lake — a landscape like a painted scroll
- Boat cruise — gliding between mountains and water
This morning you'll visit Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park. About 8 km from downtown Zhangjiajie, Tianmen Mountain is the most sacred peak of western Hunan and is suitable for visitors of all ages. You'll ride the cable car straight to the summit (about 30 minutes), enjoying views of the 99-bend winding mountain road and the surrounding peaks along the way.
At the top, visit Tianmen Temple, one of only five Buddhist temples in the world that preserve a Buddha relic, and enjoy the lush layered peaks around you. Then set off on two thrilling cliff-walk trails: first the fully transparent Glass Skywalk, 1.6 metres wide and 60 metres long, where you seem to stroll among the clouds with magnificent mountains beside you and a dizzying drop at your feet. Afterwards walk the 1,600-metre Ghost Valley Plank Road, hugging the cliff face like a giant dragon — a walk that is both thrilling and spectacular.
Continue by escalator to Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave), the unmissable highlight of the scenic area and the world's highest natural arch pierced through a mountain. Afterwards take the lift to the cable car station and ride back down the mountain.
Your wonderful 4-day Zhangjiajie tour then comes to an end. Our driver will transfer you to the airport or train station for your onward journey. If you'd like to extend your trip and explore more of China, contact us and we'll be glad to arrange it for you.
